Eversheds comment: Food sales decline a result of heavy discounting
- United Kingdom
09-09-2014
Commenting on the latest BRC Retail Monitor figures, Parmjit Singh, head of the food and drink group at law firm Eversheds, says:
"The decline in food sales is not a surprise. The heavy discounting strategy of the big 4 retailers to combat the rise of both Aldi and Lidl has inevitably led to a more competitive landscape for consumers who are now getting even more for every pound they spend at their chosen supermarket. We will see the trend for low food inflation continue as the big 4 retailers continue to try to protect market share against the discount retailers. This inevitably will put pressure on food manufacturers as their margins get squeezed."
