Eversheds comment: Proposed positive shift in Indian taxation landscape not without its complexities

    Commenting on the proposed Goods & Services Tax (GST) being debated by lawmakers in India, Ben Jones, partner and tax expert at law firm Eversheds, says:

    “A key objective for businesses operating in any jurisdiction is a simple, understandable tax system that minimises compliance costs and removes opportunities for competitors to gain advantages through manipulating tax loopholes. Multinational businesses looking to operate in India will be hoping that the proposed new GST will assist with this objective and that the political machinations that are delaying the reform can be overcome. However, even with unified political support, business should anticipate that such a significant change to the Indian tax system will not be straightforward or without its own complexities and problems. Overall though, it should still be seen as a very positive shift to the Indian taxation landscape.”
